Bardon Hill

The walk starts near the top of  Greenhill Road in Coalville.  Between the entrances to Kenmore Crescent and Romans Crescent look out for a green arrow where the Ivanhoe Way crosses the road.  It is usually possible to park close to the start point but it is a residential area so please be careful not to block anyones access. For Sat Nav users, the postcode LE67 4RJ should bring you to the start.

Take the Ivanhoe Way, following the green sign that leads off Greenhill Road on the opposite side to Stamford Drive (same side as Kenmore Cres/Romans Cres).  Follow the footpath between the fences to Vercor Close where the path leaves the end of the cul de sac going over a small stream and through a metal swing gate into fields.

Keep an eye out for a slightly overgrown Ivanhoe Way marker post on your left and follow the arrow up the left hand side of the open area. The path curves around to the left under an oak tree, passes by some large stones and then comes to a metal gate at the entrance to the woods.

Continue ahead on this wide trackway which leads around the edge of the woods.  Ignore the first path off to your right, keeping straight on around the edge of the woodland with parts of an old stone wall and open land visible off to your left.

When the woods on your right end the path ahead narrows - you will see a metal gate and low stile to your right at this point.  Turn right to go over the stile and follow the path uphill with the woods on your right and open quarry land on your left.  The path bears around to the left before reaching a flight of steps down. Immediately after the steps turn sharp right to follow a surfaced track steeply uphill.  As you go up you will see the radio mast ahead on top of the hill.

Ignore a footpath off to the left and, shortly before reaching the brick building, turn right to follow a well marked path through a metal swing gate.  After the gate there is an open area on the hilltop with a handy wooden bench where you can sit and admire the fine views.  The path now drops steeply back downhill and curves right to enter the woods.  When the path ends turn left to rejoin the track around the woods that you started out on.

Retrace your steps past the large stones, down the fields and through the swing gate into Vercor Close.  Leave Vercor Close and cross the road to access the footpath back onto Greenhill Road.
